Working From Home With ME: Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
Rupert Patterson has had the neurological condition ME since 2001. Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS or ME) is a condition that causes marked long-term tiredness (fatigue) and other symptoms which are not caused by any other known medical condition. Find out more about chronic fatigue syndrome - ME.
In 2010 his health slowly deteriorated and he was no longer able to continue working full time so took voluntary redundancy in December 2011.
After a few months rest he started to look for ways to earn money from home. With very limited mobility, even commuting daily to an office would be a challenge so the best way forward for Rupert seemed to be as his own boss working at home.
In the Autumn of 2012 Rupert spent some time researching into work from home options.
After a few false starts including a cold calling job that was just not at all a good fit, Rupert discovered Arise through Remote Employment and decided to complete the admissions process.
At that time, expectations were low because of the difficulty up until then of finding viable home working options. It was beginning to look like working from home was just a near impossible dream. If it was easy, everyone would be doing it right?
So, admissions process and a short wait for opportunities over, the work from home opportunity was announced on the Arise Portal.
Rupert's phone interview went well and getting the nod was a huge boost of confidence. It was a very difficult challenge balancing the training with managing a set back period for the ME, but being back working and earning (and giving his brain some much needed exercise!) was well worth the effort.
As time went on, the value of working with Arise proved to be immeasurable. Rupert no longer feels his health condition dictates his life, but rather he has successfully adjusted his life to fit around his health condition.
Such a 180 degree turn around has meant a huge change in mental outlook - thinking positively about the future for the first time since the redundancy and not feeling like life is passing him by because of the ME.
He feels without the Arise lifeline, none of this would be possible and his quality of his life would be very different today (materially, mentally, emotionally).
Today, the ME is still very much a condition that needs to be managed, but it is no longer the focus of an existence. It can be managed so much more effectively by the fact he can stay at home to work and not expend energy traveling as well as the many other physical and mental demands of a full time office based job.
