Outsourcing Your Office Functions
With the explosion in flexible working, remote working and office jobs working from home, more and more employers are outsourcing their office functions. Firstly, decide if outsourcing is for you. Here Emma Jones from Enterprise Nation, the premier home business resource website, considers the benefits of outsourcing business functions.
"Attending a talk delivered by the fabulous Nick Wheeler, Founder and Managing Director of Charles Tyrwhitt shirts, I was prompted to consider the benefits of outsourcing for a home based business.
Nick Wheeler tells an honest and captivating story about how he started and has grown his multi-million pound shirt business, Charles Tyrwhitt. Along the way he suffered at the hands of a distribution contractor who let him down and the decision was made to bring distribution and delivery in-house."
This begs the question; how can small companies grow if they do not entrust certain functions to outside contractors or should all functions be kept in-house to retain ultimate control?
Outsource or In-house?
Here are some considerations you might want to take into account:
* Work out what activity requires outsourcing. Is it customer-facing or an internal activity? In the case of Charles Tyrwhitt, delivery was customer facing and the customers were feeling let down. This reflected badly on the Charles Tyrwhitt brand so Nick Wheeler sensibly made moves to rectify the situation. You will want to think more carefully about outsourcing an external and client-facing function. One mistake could ruin the hard work you have put into building a reputable brand.
* Once you have identified the function, identify a partner that shares your values and commitment to a professional service.
* Seek legal advice in drawing up a contract. Ensure that the contract includes terms that guarantee quality and offers you an opt-out if you feel the contractor is letting you down.
